How to Verify a Solar Installer in India — Don't Get Cheated

India's solar boom has also brought fraudulent companies. In 2025 alone, thousands of complaints were filed against fly-by-night solar installers. Here's how to protect yourself.

Step 1: Check MNRE Empanelment

For subsidy eligibility, installers must be empanelled with MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy). Check: mnre.gov.in → Programmes → Rooftop Solar. If they're not listed, you won't get subsidy.

Step 2: Verify DISCOM Empanelment

Your local electricity company (DISCOM — MSEDCL, BESCOM, BSES, etc.) also has its own empanelled installer list. Contact your DISCOM or check their website to confirm the company is listed.

Step 3: Check Google Reviews Carefully

  • Minimum 4.0 stars with 30+ reviews
  • Read 1-star reviews — repeated complaints about non-performance or no-show are red flags
  • Check if reviews are recent (last 6 months)
  • Cluster of reviews on the same day = potentially fake

Step 4: Verify GST Registration

Ask for their GSTIN. Verify it at gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer. No GST = informal business = no valid invoice = no subsidy.

Step 5: Check Physical Office

Visit or Google Street View their office address. Companies operating from home addresses or virtual offices for large installations are risky.

Step 6: Ask for Project References

Request contacts of 3 recent customers in your area. Call them. A genuine company will happily provide this.

Step 7: Read the Contract Carefully

Before signing, ensure the contract includes:

  • Complete system specifications (panel brand, watt, model)
  • Inverter brand and model
  • Installation warranty (minimum 5 years)
  • Timeline for completion
  • Net metering assistance commitment
  • Subsidy processing support
  • Payment terms (never 100% upfront — max 70% before, 30% after)

Step 8: Never Pay 100% in Advance

Reputable installers accept: 30–50% booking advance, 30–40% at installation, final 10–30% after commissioning and net meter connection. Anyone demanding full payment upfront is a risk.
